Crystal is the only water bottled in Belize that is filtered, treated and purified with State of the Art Technology.  There are many other bottled waters in Belize labeled “purified by reverse osmosis and treated with ultraviolet light and ozone”, but we can pride ourselves that Crystal is the only water that has been purified by reverse osmosis and then re-purified by reverse osmosis before being treated with ultraviolet light and ozone. We can boast of being constantly monitored by  a state-of-the-art  water laboratory. For the past thirteen years Crystal has been thoroughly tested in our laboratory on a monthly basis for chemical and physical analysis as well as micro-bacteriological analysis to guarantee that Crystal remains the finest purified water on the market.  After all these years, there is not been a single competitor who has even come close to matching the high quality of water bottled by Crystal.

What is the process for producing Crystal Water?

Extraction, Dosing, & Coagulation:

Like all bottled water, there must be a source from which water is obtained. Crystal Water originally comes from the pristine Maya Mountains of Belize. This water is pumped to the Water Treatment Plant in Ladyville. As this water is being pumped in, its turbidity (amount of suspended particles in the water) is being monitored constantly by both an inline turbidimeter and in‐lab analysis. Liquid aluminum sulfate is also added to the water as it is being pumped to allow any particles in the water (turbidity) to coagulate for easier sedimentation and filtration. This is referred to as dosing of a coagulant, and it is done until a Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (N.T.U.) of less than 0.1 after filtration is obtained. Hence, dosing of coagulant is relative to the level of turbidity of the incoming water.

Filtration & Disinfection:

As the water passes through our Triplex Multi‐tech Filters, coagulated particles are removed along with color, odor and taste. These filters work in pairs (3 pairs total), with each pair having one filter filled with gravel, and the other with carbon and sand. The filters containing the gravel remove the coagulated particles, while the other filters containing carbon and sand remove color, odor and taste. Once the water has passed through the filters, its turbidity is once again measured to guarantee a turbidity of less than 0.1. At this time, Chlorine is also injected into the water at 2 to 5 parts per million (ppm) Total Chlorine. Chlorine is a powerful disinfection agent; it quickly kills bacteria and other microbes, helps remove tastes and odors, and controls the growth of slime and algae in pipes and storage tanks. This processed water is then stored in large storage tanks from which Free Chlorine (chlorine available after disinfection) is constantly monitored and maintained between 1 ppm to 2 ppm.

De‐Chlorination & Softener:

From the storage tank, water is pumped into two elevated tanks by centrifugal pumps. This water is then distributed to the Crystal Bottling Company via gravitational force. Once there, the water is then passed through a Granular Activated Carbon Filter which removes all traces of chlorine. After Chlorine removal, the water is passed through a softener where Calcium and Magnesium Carbonate (Total Hardness) are displaced by Sodium Carbonate through a process known as ion exchange. At this stage the water is classified as soft water (0.0 ppm hardness).

Pre‐Filters, Reverse Osmosis & Chlorination:

Soft water is then passed through 5.0 micron pre‐filters to remove any remaining sand silt, dirt, or other sediment still remaining in the water. Immediately after the filters, the water then enters the first Reverse Osmosis unit where 85 to 99% of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is removed. This water, low in TDS, is then chlorinated a second time and stored in a tank where chlorine concentration is maintained at 1.00 ppm – 1.50 ppm free available chlorine.

De‐Chlorination, Pre‐Filters, Reverse Osmosis:

From the storage tank, water is then passed through another filter containing Granular Activated Carbon to once again remove all traces of chlorine. This water then passes through 5.0 Micron Filters for a second time to filter out any remaining sediment that may be present. After this it enters into a second Reverse Osmosis unit to further remove any Total Dissolved Solids present in the water. After passing through the second reverse osmosis unit, this water is stored in a completely closed tank free from any sort of ambient exposure.

Sterilization & Bottling:

The water is pumped from the Crystal Storage Tank to the processing line where it passes through an Ozonator. Ozone is a disinfectant that effectively kills biological contaminants and viruses. The water then passes through a chamber where it is exposed to Ultraviolet (UV) Light. UV light also effectively destroys bacteria and viruses. Once these steps have been completely successfully the water, the now ultra‐purified Crystal Water, is stored for a minimum of 48 hours before being shipped to consumers countrywide. This period of storage is critical for two reasons. First, it allows the Ozone to complete its sterilization of the water. Second, it allows enough time for the ozone to dissipate. Dissipation is important because ozone creates an “off taste” similar to that of chlorinated tap water. Hence, if not stored for the appropriate time, consumers will complain about the taste of the water.
